Warm weather in April kick-started the nearly perfect season in 2016 on the early side, followed by a moderate July and very cool August. Typical of our autumn weather, a gentle, late heat spell brought the vintage home. There was nary a day over 100F from veraison through harvest, my favorite kind of season. Even more important than daytime highs, nighttime lows were downright cold all summer, preserving good natural acidity.

The 2016 Napa Cabernet reminds me of the 2014 with the volume turned up a bit. Redolent with bright red currant, blueberry, tart cherry and darker plums, cassis and blackberry fruit, it is wildly complex. The fruit aromatics are complexed by baking spices and floral notes including dried rose petals and violets. Varietal dried herbs add yet another dimension. An alluring yin of minerality and snappy natural acidity play off against the yang of a broad, luscious mouthfeel.

The 2016 Sunbasket Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon aromas jump out of the glass, including wildly complex Luxardo cherry, black raspberry, plums, blueberries and baking spices. Grace-notes include violet perfume and star anise. Rich and full in the mouth, the velvety but grippy tannins and bright natural acidity give it structure. Characteristic minerality completes the tasty package.

The 2016 Helios Sunbasket Vineyard Cab Franc is very pretty. Expressive aromas of dried flowers and pencil lead minerality complement raspberry and tart cherry fruit. Darker notes of cassis and anise chime in and vibrant natural acidity keeps it lively.Cathy Corison

2016 Corison Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

View from the Cellar
The bouquet is classic, wafting from the glass in a complex and very classy blend of black cherries, sweet dark berries, Cuban cigar wrapper, Rutherford dust, a deft framing of cedary oak and just a hint of eucalyptus in the upper register. On the palate the wine is extremely pure and focused, full-bodied and beautifully bound up in its sophisticated structural chassis, with a gorgeous core of fruit, great soil signature, ripe, buried tannins and superb length and grip on the seamlessly balanced finish. This is stunning juice…John Gilman, July-August 2019, Issue #82Wine Enthusiast Magazine
95 - Cellar Selection  …serious wine, complex and integrated, with intriguing aspects of leather, earth and truffle. Soft and supple, it shows a spiciness of clove and tart red raspberry and cassis, deliciously memorable in every way.September 2019
2016 Corison Sunbasket Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Vinous - explore all things wine
Cathy Corison's 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Sunbasket Vineyard is just fabulous. Dense, powerful and beautifully layered in the glass, this sumptuous Cabernet fills a very nice middle spot in the Corison range, as it is quite succulent and yet also far more approachable than the Kronos. Soft, curvy contours add to a sense of immediacy and sheer allure. Open-knit and expressive, with all of the radiance that gives this site its name, the 2016 Sunbasket is outrageously delicious, even in the early going.Antonio Galloni, Dec 2018View from the Cellar
The 2016 Sunbasket Vineyard bottling of cabernet sauvignon from Cathy Corison is just a touch riper than the estate bottling, but still very civilized at 13.4 percent alcohol, and it too is an absolute cellar treasure in the making. The wine is a bit sappier on the nose than the estate bottling (as one would expect from a vineyard named Sunbasket), offering up a superb bouquet of black raspberries, black cherries, a hint of allspice, cigar smoke, tobacco leaf, an excellent base of soil tones and a discreet framing of spicy new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full- bodied, focused and rock solid at the core, with ripe, well-integrated tannins, great focus and grip and a very long, nascently complex and promising finish. This will probably drink a few years sooner than the 2016 estate bottling, but should age just as long and gracefully and it will be for future generations to decide which bottling they like better thirty or forty years down the road!John Gilman, July-August 2019, Issue #82Wine & Spirits Magazine
Top US Cabernet of 2019
This cabernet is cool enough to sustain its herbal character, even as it’s saturated with dark fruit and meaty enough to stand in the company of its Napa Valley neighbors. The herbal side comes across in notes of fennel, tumbling through the juicy, gravelly texture, bringing to mind a match with grilled fennel sausages. This is the third vintage of Sunbasket, a vineyard just north of Cathy Corison’s winery on the west of side Highway 29, where she sourced fruit for three decades before purchasing it in 2014.(10/19)

2016 Helios Sunbasket Vineyard Cabernet Franc

Vinous - explore all things wine
The 2016 Cabernet Franc Sunbasket Vineyard is a gorgeous wine that captures all the radiance of this site on the southern edge of St. Helena. Aromatically expressive and wonderfully nuanced, the 2016 has so much to offer. Mocha, dried flowers and mint add perfume to this elegant, wonderfully polished Cabernet Franc from Cathy Corison. The 2016 is simply stunning.Antonio Galloni, Dec 2018View from the Cellar
The 2016 Cabernet Franc “Helios” bottling from Cathy Corison from her Sunbasket Vineyard is really good this year, coming in at 13.6 percent octane and offering up glorious purity and precision in its aromatic constellation of sweet dark berries, tobacco leaf, a fine base of soil tones, cigar ash, a dollop of menthol, a dash of cedar and a beautiful floral topnote redolent of both lavender and violets. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and very, very elegant in profile, with lovely depth at the core, ripe, seamless tannins, good acids and outstanding focus and grip on the long, complex and perfectly balanced finish. This is a stunning wine. John Gilman, July-August 2019, Issue #82Wine & Spirits Magazine
Top 100 Best Wines of 2019
93  For three decades, Cathy Corison consistently relied on Sunbasket, a vineyard just to the north of her winery, for part of her St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon. When she purchased the site in 2014, she began to bottle the fruit as a vineyard designate. In 2016, the franc from Sunbasket has the kind of clarity and earthy detail that the variety rarely delivers in Napa Valley. While the flavors are rich and fully saturated, the wine feels relatively light as it opens and the tannins yield their cool, herbal complexities. Decant this if you open it now, to serve with seared duck breast.(10/19)
