A 2017 Helios Napa Valley Sunbasket Vineyard Syrah?! I've always loved the wines of the northern Rhône, especially Côte-Rôtie. Made from Syrah, their wild complexity includes red and black fruit, spice, flowers, meat and herbs. We're leasing a four-acre piece contiguous with Sunbasket Vineyard that was planted to Syrah. So I was thrilled to pick one last vintage before we pulled the vines. This was serendipity at its finest.
I’m pleased to offer this unique bottling, available exclusively from the winery. Only 175 cases were produced. I expect this wine to enjoy a very long, interesting life.
In 2017 the ripening season was cool through August, topped off with a heat event in early September. We started picking the Syrah, which is balanced and nuanced due to the cool August weather and relatively fruit-driven thanks to the heat at picking time.
With classically inky color and rose petal and violet perfume, this wine
is big but light on its feet. Baking spices, olives and hints of
peppermint join juicy black raspberry, black cherry and cassis fruit.
The gravelly soils in Sunbasket promoted a mineral verve. French oak
barrels contributed a smoky note.Cathy
